Interim Secretary General of Science Europe
Bio: A physicist by training with a PhD in Physics from University College Dublin, Conor O’Carroll has had an internationally mobile career. He did his doctoral research in Italy and worked for both academia and industry in Ireland, Scotland, and Germany. He has worked in different sectors, including petroleum engineering and nuclear technology. He has extensive experience in policy and strategy formulation and impact evaluation, having worked in the European Commission’s DG Research, with the Irish science and policy advisory agency Forfás, and the funding agency Science Foundation Ireland.
In recent years, he has worked on assessment of EEA/Norway grants (2017), evaluating the impact of ERC grants during FP7 (2017–2018), evaluating the impact of the National Quality Framework for Doctoral Training (2017–2018) and facilitating Research Prioritisation in Luxembourg (2018–2019). He was also Chair of the European Steering Group on Human Resources and Mobility (SGHRM) from 2012 to 2017. He is currently the interim Secretary General of Science Europe.
